Majority supports Trump’s proposal to end taxes on tips: poll
A new poll shows that a majority of Americans support President-elect Trump’s proposal to end taxes on tips.
In the poll conducted by The Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 54% said they “strongly” or “somewhat” support “eliminating taxes on earnings from tips.” 23% said they “neither support nor oppose” eliminating taxes on tip earnings, and 22% said they “strongly” or “somewhat” oppose ending taxes on tip earnings.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump said in June that he would end taxes on tipping as the “first thing” he would do upon returning to the White House.
“For the hotel workers and the people who get tips, you’re going to be very happy. Because when I get into office, we’re not going to tax tips,” Trump said during a rally in Nevada at the time.
He added: “We will not do that, and we will do that immediately, first thing in office, because it has been a point of contention for years and years and years.” “And you do a wonderful job of service, taking care of people and I think that would be something really worthy.”
In the AP-NORC poll, 32% of respondents said they were “very confident” or “very confident” when it came to the president-elect’s “ability” to work on “the economy and jobs.”
The AP-NORC poll was conducted Jan. 9-13, included 1,147 people and had a margin of plus or minus 3.9 percentage points of sampling error.
