Trust in science: a high-stakes game for US public health

Score

With health misinformation spreading faster on social media than even the most contagious viruses, Americans’ overall trust in medical scientists remains lower than it was before the pandemic, according to a recent study by the Pew Research Center.

It’s no surprise, then, that — with misinformation fueling ongoing vaccine hesitation in 2024 — whooping cough and measles outbreaks are four times higher than they were the year before. Distrust of public health has grown beyond vaccines to include questioning the safety of fluoridated water and pasteurized milk. Public health is more than just a public relations problem; The consequences are deadly.

What damage has already been done and what challenges lie ahead? Who decides what information is true versus false information? And what can public health leaders do to restore trust in medical science and America’s health agencies?

Join The Hill as we convene leaders in government, health care, science, and patient advocacy to answer these questions and more and understand the current state of health care discourse.
